Minister Urges UNAM Council to Uphold Governance and Accountability Standards

The University of Namibia’s governance is under new leadership as the Council begins its tenure.

Dr. Sanet L. Steenkamp, the Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, emphasized the importance of independence and accountability during the Council’s inaugural meeting. She congratulated the new members, led by Chairperson Wilhencia Uiras, and highlighted the public trust placed in their leadership.

New Leadership at University of Namibia Council

The newly appointed Council of the University of Namibia (UNAM) is tasked with significant responsibilities. Dr. Steenkamp reminded the members that their governance role extends beyond mere administrative duties. They are expected to provide strategic leadership and oversight to ensure the institution’s integrity and sustainability.

Accountability is a key focus for the Council. They must monitor performance and ensure that resources are used responsibly. This oversight is crucial for maintaining the trust of the public and the stakeholders involved with the University.

Minister’s Expectations for Council’s Role

Dr. Steenkamp reaffirmed the Ministry’s respect for the Council’s statutory independence. The Ministry’s role is to provide policy and strategic direction, ensuring alignment with national priorities without directly managing the University. This balance is essential for fostering an environment where the University can thrive.

Furthermore, the Minister urged the Council to prioritize student access and success. Relevant skills development and the University’s contribution to Namibia’s economy and society are also critical areas of focus.

Next Steps for the UNAM Council

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight.
  • Monitor performance and resource use.
  • Focus on student access and success.
  • Ensure alignment with national priorities.

The newly appointed UNAM Council is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of education in Namibia.
