World Bank Begins Support Mission for Malawi’s Digital Transformation Project

The World Bank is actively supporting Malawi’s digital transformation with a significant project review.

The World Bank has launched a five-day Implementation Support Mission for Malawi’s 0 million Digital Malawi Acceleration Project (DMAP). This mission, which began on August 31, 2026, in Blantyre, aims to assess implementation progress and address challenges as Malawi advances its digital agenda.

World Bank Engages with Malawi’s Digital Initiatives

The mission is led by World Bank Task Team Leaders Tim Kelly and Paul Ndungutse. It marks the first formal engagement with Arthur Nanthuru, the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC), since he took office in April 2026. Discussions during this meeting focused on DMAP’s progress, institutional coordination, and the upcoming workplan and budget for 2026/27.

As the implementing agency for DMAP, the PPPC collaborates with the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology and other government bodies to facilitate Malawi’s digital transformation. The mission also includes consultations with the DMAP Project Implementation Unit (PIU) to evaluate progress and identify challenges.

Key Discussions on Digital Connectivity Initiatives

A Consultative Meeting on Digital Malawi Connectivity Initiatives – Rural Broadband is part of the mission’s agenda. This meeting will address the Universal Service Fund (USF) Cell Tower Initiative, Public Institution Connectivity, and the School Connectivity Initiative. These discussions are crucial for enhancing digital access across Malawi.

The mission aims to strengthen coordination among various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) involved in DMAP, ensuring that the project meets its development goals effectively.
