Africazine:

Sierra Leone has marked a significant milestone in its energy sector with the commissioning of the RESPITE Solar-plus-Storage Project.

This project, completed by Sungrow, features a total energy storage capacity of 35MWh and is the first major national-scale power generation initiative in nearly a decade. It aims to increase the national electricity access rate from 16% to 36% once fully operational.

Major Breakthrough in Sierra Leone’s Energy Access

Sierra Leone has one of the lowest electricity access rates globally, with only 16% of the population having reliable power. The national grid is heavily reliant on a single 161kV transmission line, which connects the Bumbuna Hydropower Plant to Freetown. This infrastructure limits access for the majority of the population, particularly in rural areas.

The RESPITE project, supported by the World Bank, is a crucial step in addressing these challenges. It not only enhances energy availability but also aims to stabilize electricity supply for households, schools, and healthcare facilities.

Sierra Leone: Key figures on RESPITE Solar-plus-Storage Project

  • 35MWh total energy storage capacity
  • Expected increase in national electricity access rate from 16% to 36%
  • Nearly 100 local employment opportunities created

Challenges Overcome in Project Execution

The RESPITE project faced significant barriers, including weak grid conditions and limited electricity affordability. Sungrow’s advanced technologies and expertise were pivotal in overcoming these obstacles. The project team implemented an emergency response strategy, allowing for off-grid operation during commissioning.

By leveraging global resources and technical support, Sungrow ensured timely project execution and grid integration, demonstrating its commitment to Sierra Leone’s energy transformation.

Next Steps for Sierra Leone’s Energy Future

  • Full operational status of the RESPITE project to be achieved soon
  • Continued support from Sungrow for ongoing energy challenges
  • Focus on expanding renewable energy solutions across the country

The RESPITE project is a game-changer for Sierra Leone’s energy landscape, paving the way for a more sustainable future.
