Malawi is set to transform public service delivery through a significant ICT investment plan.
The government is launching a four-year 0 million ICT investment plan with Huawei Technology aimed at enhancing service accessibility for citizens. This initiative will connect government ministries and agencies, allowing for streamlined access to services without the need for repetitive documentation.
Malawi’s Ambitious ICT Investment with Huawei
Minister of Information and Communications Technology Shadric Namalomba announced the collaboration with Huawei during discussions in China. The investment plan focuses on the Boma Lathu data platform, which is designed to improve public service delivery.
Currently, citizens face challenges accessing services due to outdated methods, relying on emails, flash drives, and paper. This not only risks personal information but also delays service delivery. The new platform aims to change this by providing a more efficient system.
Key Features of the Data Sharing Regulation
The proposed Data Sharing Regulation will be tabled by the end of the year. It mandates that all data requests go through the National Data Centre, prohibiting informal data transfers. This regulation aims to protect citizens’ personal information and ensure that data sharing is conducted under audited agreements.
Additionally, the Malawi Government is upgrading the National Data Centre to support artificial intelligence applications, funded by the World Bank’s Digital Malawi Acceleration Project. This upgrade is expected to enhance the overall digital infrastructure in the country.
Next Steps for Malawi’s ICT Transformation
- Table the Data Sharing Regulation by the end of the year.
- Upgrade the National Data Centre for AI applications.
- Implement the Boma Lathu data platform across government agencies.
This investment in ICT infrastructure is a crucial step towards improving public service delivery in Malawi.
