The Liberia Maritime Authority is taking significant steps to enhance education in the country through a major renovation project.
The Authority has launched a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative to restore the principal’s residence at the Booker Washington Institute in Kakata, Margibi County. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, led by LiMA Commissioner Cllr. Neto Zarzar Lighe Sr.
LiMA’s Commitment to Educational Development
The renovation project at the Booker Washington Institute (BWI) stems from a request made by Principal Dr. Nancy Teta Freeman in 2024. Following a thorough internal assessment, LiMA determined that the principal’s residence was historically significant and urgently needed suitable accommodation for the institution’s leadership.
Cllr. Lighe emphasized that this initiative aligns with LiMA’s broader objectives of supporting education and national development. He noted that while LiMA has focused on coastal communities, extending support to inland areas like BWI is crucial for comprehensive development.
Laying the Foundation for Future Growth
During the ceremony, stakeholders expressed their appreciation for LiMA’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the project. Cllr. Lighe assured that the renovation would be closely monitored to ensure quality and timely completion.
Principal Dr. Freeman highlighted the historical significance of the residence, recalling its role as a gathering place for students. She expressed gratitude for the project, which she believes will enhance the institution’s legacy.
Next Steps for the Renovation Project
- Ongoing monitoring of the renovation progress by LiMA.
- Collaboration between LiMA and BWI to explore plans for transitioning BWI into a technical college.
- Continued support from LiMA’s Board of Directors for future initiatives.
This renovation project reflects a strong commitment to enhancing educational facilities and supporting Liberia’s development.
