PARADISE Private Hospital (PPH) is on a mission to transform healthcare in Papua New Guinea. The hospital’s long-term corporate plan positions it as a crucial part of the nation’s specialized medical system. This initiative aims to provide higher tertiary-level healthcare, alleviating the financial burden on patients who currently travel overseas for treatment.
Recently, a specialized medical team, led by Australian professor Dr Paddy Dewan, performed life-saving surgeries on eight children. These high-risk procedures were conducted in collaboration with PPH’s resident paediatrician, Dr Kennedy James, and included five trainee surgeons, enhancing local medical expertise.
Key Outcomes and Future Plans for Training
Dr Polapoi Chalau, CEO of PPH, emphasized the importance of establishing specialized centres to improve healthcare quality. The hospital is committed to training local surgeons and nurses, ensuring that the skills and knowledge remain within Papua New Guinea.
Six out of seven monitored patients achieved excellent outcomes post-surgery, demonstrating the effectiveness of the procedures. Plans are in place to bring Dr Dewan back to the country at least twice a year, further strengthening the training programs at PPH and Port Moresby General Hospital.
