Panama has firmly backed Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Moroccan Sahara dispute, emphasizing its importance for regional stability.

This support was articulated during discussions in Rabat between Panamanian Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Carlos Arturo Hoyos Boyd and Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita. Hoyos Boyd described Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the “only serious, credible, and realistic basis” for resolving the ongoing conflict.

Panama Reaffirms Support for Moroccan Sovereignty

The Panamanian official highlighted that the autonomy plan should serve as a framework for a lasting political solution within the United Nations process. He underscored the necessity of respecting Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in any resolution.

During the meeting, Hoyos Boyd also confirmed that the Panamanian Embassy in Morocco exercises full consular authority across all Moroccan territory, including the Southern Provinces. This statement reinforces Panama’s commitment to Morocco’s territorial claims.

Key Aspects of the Autonomy Plan

Furthermore, he expressed confidence in the ongoing efforts by the United Nations Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate negotiations. These efforts aim to achieve a “just, lasting, and acceptable solution” for all parties involved in the dispute.
