Egypt Discovers New Natural Gas Field in Nile Delta, Boosts Production

Share

Africazine:

Egypt has made a significant natural gas discovery in the Nile Delta, enhancing its energy production capabilities.

The new well, named “Nidoco N-2,” is expected to produce around 50 million cubic feet of gas per day. This discovery adds to Egypt’s current output of approximately 4.2 billion cubic feet daily, highlighting the country’s ongoing efforts to boost its energy sector.

New Natural Gas Well Boosts Egypt’s Energy Output

The Egyptian Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ministry announced the successful drilling of the exploratory well “Nidoco N-2” in a concession area operated by the Italian company Eni in partnership with British Petroleum (BP). This well was drilled onshore using advanced directional drilling technologies, which have proven effective in reducing costs and enhancing operational efficiency.

Located less than two kilometers from existing production facilities, the new well can be quickly connected to the network, allowing for early production within weeks. This strategic positioning is expected to facilitate a swift integration into Egypt’s natural gas supply chain.

Egypt: Key figures on Natural Gas Production

  • 50 million cubic feet per day from Nidoco N-2
  • 4.2 billion cubic feet daily current production
  • 2.2 trillion cubic feet annual domestic consumption
  • 6 billion cubic feet daily average domestic demand
  • 7.2 billion cubic feet daily demand during summer months
  • 30 trillion cubic feet estimated reserves at Zohr gas field
  • 3.2 billion cubic feet peak production from Zohr in 2022
  • 1.25 billion cubic feet projected production from Zohr by mid-2025

Context of Egypt’s Energy Landscape

Egypt’s domestic consumption of natural gas is substantial, averaging around 6 billion cubic feet per day, with demand peaking during the summer months. The Zohr gas field, discovered in 2015, remains a cornerstone of Egypt’s gas production, contributing significantly to the national output.

The partnership between Eni, BP, and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation through Petrobel underscores the collaborative efforts to enhance Egypt’s energy resources. This discovery aligns with Egypt’s strategy to meet rising domestic demand and maintain energy security.

Next Steps for Egypt’s Natural Gas Development

  • Connect Nidoco N-2 to the gas network within weeks
  • Monitor production levels and integration into existing infrastructure
  • Continue exploration and development in the Nile Delta region

Egypt’s new natural gas discovery marks a pivotal moment in its energy sector, promising enhanced production capabilities.
