Zimbabwe is looking to Rwanda’s digital transformation as a model for its own AI initiatives.

At the 2026 Digital Economy Conference, Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services Tatenda Annastacia Mavetera highlighted Rwanda’s leadership in digital governance. She emphasized the importance of collaboration between the two nations, particularly in regulatory innovation and knowledge sharing.

Mavetera praised Rwanda’s achievements, particularly the Irembo system and advancements linked to the Kigali International Financial Centre. These initiatives showcase how effective policies can enhance national competitiveness. Rwanda’s approach serves as a powerful example for Zimbabwe as it seeks to advance its own digital landscape.

The minister expressed a desire for deeper collaboration with Rwanda, focusing on artificial intelligence. She believes that sharing knowledge between innovation centers can significantly benefit both countries.

Zimbabwe is actively pursuing its artificial intelligence goals. Mavetera outlined several local initiatives aimed at fostering AI development. Plans include introducing an AI skills visa and making AI literacy mandatory for civil servants.

Additionally, the development of sovereign data infrastructure is a priority. Mavetera emphasized that African nations must build their digital futures from within, ensuring that growth is driven by locally relevant innovation.
