Eswatini’s commitment to sustainable energy is gaining international recognition.

Prince Lonkhokhela, the Minister of Natural Resources and Energy, accepted the Best Energy Efficiency Initiative Award for the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital Solar System Project at the 2026 SADC Sustainable Energy Week Awards. The project, funded by the Italian Government with an investment of €2.2 million (over E44 million), significantly reduced energy consumption and operational costs at the hospital.

Eswatini’s Award-Winning Solar Project

The RFM Hospital Solar System Project has been lauded for its success in enhancing energy efficiency. It features a 1-megawatt solar photovoltaic system with battery storage, which has transformed the hospital’s energy landscape. Additionally, energy-efficient appliances were introduced, and a coal-fired boiler was decommissioned, further reducing the hospital’s carbon footprint.

This initiative not only cuts costs but also bolsters the hospital’s ability to provide quality healthcare services. The collaboration involved the Ministry of Natural Resources and Energy, the Ministry of Health, and technical support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
