Egypt is taking significant steps to support its vulnerable populations ahead of Ramadan.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced a social protection package worth 40 billion Egyptian pounds (about US8 million) aimed at assisting 15 million families. This initiative, mandated by President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, includes direct cash support and additional funds for healthcare and agricultural support.
Egypt’s Comprehensive Social Protection Package
The newly announced social protection package is designed to provide direct cash support to families in need. This assistance will be distributed in two installments before Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr, ensuring that vulnerable groups receive timely help during the holy month.
In addition to cash support, the package allocates approximately 9 billion pounds (US3 million) for healthcare initiatives. This funding will enhance state treatment, address surgical waiting lists, and expand health insurance in Minya Province, starting April 1.
Healthcare and Agricultural Support Initiatives
The government is also focusing on agricultural support, with 4 billion pounds (US million) designated for wheat price adjustments to aid farmers. This move is part of a broader strategy to stabilize food prices and ensure food security in the country.
Furthermore, an additional 15 billion pounds (US2 million) will be directed towards the “Decent Life” initiative, aimed at completing essential service projects in rural areas by the end of the current fiscal year on June 30.
Next Steps and Implementation Timeline
- Direct cash support to be distributed in two installments before Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr.
- Healthcare funding to commence in Minya Province starting April 1.
