The Girls Shine Foundation is empowering secondary school girls in Malawi through a new mentorship initiative.

This program aims to provide guidance and counseling, helping girls set career goals and realize their potential. Launched at Bwaila Secondary School in Lilongwe, the initiative will expand to more schools in the city and beyond.

Girls Shine Foundation Launches Mentorship Program

The Girls Shine Foundation (GSF) has initiated a mentorship program designed to support secondary school girls. During a session at Bwaila Secondary School, Sarah Kazembe from GSF highlighted the need for safe spaces where girls can receive motivation and guidance. The program encourages girls to complete their education and pursue their career aspirations.

In addition to mentorship, GSF is offering vocational skills training. This training aims to equip girls with practical skills after they finish their studies, preparing them for their next steps in life. Kazembe emphasized the importance of these opportunities in helping young girls realize their full potential.

Addressing Educational Challenges for Girls

Jean Kamenya, a guidance and counseling teacher at Bwaila Secondary School, stressed the significance of mentorship programs. She noted that many girls face financial challenges that hinder their education. Initiatives like GSF’s are crucial in providing the support needed for girls to continue their studies and overcome these obstacles.

The mentorship sessions not only guide girls academically but also help them navigate personal and financial challenges. This holistic approach is vital for fostering resilience and ambition among young women in Malawi.

Future Plans for Expansion and Support

  • Expand the mentorship program to more secondary schools in Lilongwe.
  • Occasionally travel outside the city to reach additional schools.
  • Continue offering vocational skills training for girls who have completed their studies.

Empowering girls through mentorship and skills training is key to their future success.
