Transforming Lives through Pediatric Cardiac Surgery in Angola

Luanda, Angola – In a remarkable initiative that promises to make waves in pediatric healthcare, the Dom Cardeal Alexandre do Nascimento Hospital Complex has launched a pediatric cardiac surgery campaign this month. Kicking off on the 1st, this campaign, aptly named “Treating Hearts, Transforming Lives,” seeks to significantly improve the national capabilities in treating congenital heart disease in children across Angola.

This inspiring campaign is the brainchild of the Ngana Zenza Foundation for Community Development, headed by none other than Ana Dias Lourenço, the First Lady of the Republic. The initiative will continue until the 20th of this month and is being executed in collaboration with the Global Cardiac Alliance, a reputable organization dedicated to enhancing heart care globally.

At the forefront of this mission is Dr. William Novick, an esteemed pediatric cardiac surgeon renowned for his extensive experience in the field. Dr. Novick, alongside an impressive team that includes two local surgeons trained directly under his mentorship, two perfusionists, an anesthesiologist, an instrument nurse, three pediatric cardiac intensivists, and six specialized pediatric cardiac nurses, is working diligently to foster local talent and expertise at the Hospital Complex.

So far, the campaign has already celebrated the successful completion of six surgical procedures, which is a testament to its swift impact. Among these surgeries are two particularly intricate cases: one involving a 25-day-old infant diagnosed with transposition of the great vessels and another concerning a two-kilogram newborn facing partial agenesis of the sternum—a rare condition that presents substantial challenges. By the time the campaign concludes, it is anticipated that at least 24 pediatric cardiac surgeries will be conducted, with many patients coming from Luanda and other provinces, highlighting the campaign’s wide-reaching influence.

This initiative not only seeks to treat young patients but also emphasizes a significant commitment to capacity building within Angola’s healthcare system. With such proactive measures being taken, the future of pediatric cardiac care in Angola looks promising, potentially offering new hope to families across the nation.
