Groundbreaking Renewable Energy Initiative in South Africa
In an exciting development for South Africa’s renewable energy landscape, Seriti Green has officially unveiled its R1 billion transmission station, marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy transition. Located in Mpumalanga, the Vunumoya Main Transmission Station has completed an 18-month construction period and has already started contributing to the national grid, well ahead of its anticipated schedule.
This state-of-the-art facility became operational this week, enabling the transmission of 155 megawatts of renewable wind energy from the Ummbila Emoyeni One Wind Energy Facility. Power delivery commenced on November 28, showcasing not only the efficiency of the project but also the potential of renewable energy in South Africa.
The Vunumoya station serves as a pivotal part of a larger initiative aimed at delivering a total of 900 megawatts of renewable energy. It features advanced infrastructure including 400kV and 132kV systems, as well as a robust 500MVA transformer designed to accommodate additional energy resources as they are developed. This expansion sets the stage for a significant increase in wind and solar energy contributions to the grid, playing a crucial role in the country’s decarbonization efforts.
According to Peter Venn, CEO of Seriti Green, energizing the transmission station places South Africa’s renewable program on a robust trajectory for sustained impact. “This project exemplifies what can be achieved through coordinated efforts towards expanding our grid,” he stated.
The importance of this project was echoed by Eskom's CEO, Dan Marokane, who emphasized that enhancing grid capability is vital for supporting the nation’s clean energy ambitions.
