In a significant gathering that highlights the commitment of member nations, the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) Committee of Ambassadors convened recently to tackle pressing global issues and prepare for key events on the horizon. Among the highlights discussed were the preparations for the upcoming COP30 climate conference and the pivotal 11th OACPS Summit of Heads of State and Government. This meeting comes at a critical time as the world continues to grapple with the impacts of climate change and seeks effective measures to tackle environmental challenges.
The OACPS Committee also took the opportunity to review the technical workshop outcomes focused on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) advisory opinion on climate action, underscoring the importance of legal frameworks in addressing climate-related disputes. Such discussions play a crucial role in fostering a collaborative approach toward environmental stewardship.
During his address, OACPS Secretary-General Moussa Batraki emphasized the need for unity among member states. “No nation, no region, and no organisation can meet today’s challenges alone,” he stated. His call for renewed global solidarity and stronger cooperation resonates deeply in today’s interconnected world, where nations must work hand-in-hand to tackle common challenges. His vision for a revitalised multilateral system “fit for purpose in the 21st century” reflects a forward-thinking approach that many will find inspiring.
Chair of the OACPS Committee of Ambassadors, Moses Kuoni Mose from the Solomon Islands, also addressed the importance of maintaining unity in addressing the intersection of global challenges and collective aspirations. As he outlined five priority areas for his presidency, it became clear that the future of the OACPS is in capable hands. These priority areas include supporting the OACPS reform process, implementing the Samoa Agreement, convening the 120th OACPS Council of Ministers in December 2025, ensuring financial sustainability, and advancing preparations for the 11th OACPS Summit scheduled for March 2026 in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
Overall, this recent meeting reflects a pivotal moment for the OACPS, where collaborative efforts could lead to significant advancements in climate action and other critical areas for development. As we move forward, the collective actions and resolutions stemming from such meetings will be key to building a sustainable future for member states.
