In a heartening series of events across Zambia, government officials have renewed their commitment to ensuring that both boys and girls receive equal educational opportunities, highlighting the unique challenges that each gender faces in their educational journeys. In the vibrant Eastern Province, Deputy Permanent Secretary Lewis Mwape emphatically advocated for collaborative efforts among traditional leaders and community members to empower the boy child. During a poignant memorial service for the late Chief Nyamphande the Fourth, he remarked that many boys in the Nyampande Chiefdom have unfortunately taken on roles as cattle herders, which detracts from their educational pursuits. Dr. Mwape acknowledged the government’s free education initiative spearheaded by President Hakainde Hichilema and urged all stakeholders to leverage this opportunity. “Now is the time for concerted efforts to ensure that no boy is left behind in the quest for education,” he declared, appealing to the community’s sense of collective responsibility.

Meanwhile, in the northern region of Mansa, Luapula Province Permanent Secretary Prudence Chinama highlighted the government’s steadfast commitment to empowering girls. Speaking through Deputy Permanent Secretary Evans Sikabbubba, Chinama reiterated the importance of safeguarding girls’ rights to education, considering the myriad challenges they encounter. Notably, the Free Education Policy, alongside initiatives such as the Keeping Girls in School program and the Children’s Code Act of 2022, signifies substantial legislative progress aimed at supporting girls’ education.

At a gathering at Lubende Combined School, Mansa District Commissioner Ireen Chivweta extolled girls as the future “drivers of transformation” within the nation, acknowledging the obstacles they confront—ranging from climate change to economic hardship. She praised ongoing legislative reforms designed to create a safer and more educationally conducive environment for girls.

Highlighting the need for collective action, girl child representative Trascillar Chola poignantly shared the barriers many girls face, including early marriages, teenage pregnancies, and lack of essential resources like sanitary pads. Chola’s call to action underscores the importance of community support in addressing these critical issues.
