The African Development Bank Group is taking significant steps to enhance water security across the continent.
At Cairo Water Week, the Bank launched its 2026–2030 African Water Facility Strategy, urging African nations to increase funding for water and sanitation projects. The strategy outlines a core funding requirement of EUR 75–120 million over five years and calls for USD 300 million to support the African Urban Sanitation Investment Initiative.
African Water Facility Strategy Launched in Cairo
The African Development Bank Group unveiled its new strategy during Cairo Water Week, emphasizing the importance of local funding for water projects. The African Ministers’ Council on Water established the African Water Facility, which the Bank manages. This facility aids countries in preparing projects that can attract financing through feasibility studies and technical designs.
The strategy aligns with the African Union’s “Africa Water Vision 2063 and Policy,” aiming to transform ambitious water goals into actionable projects. Egypt and Senegal co-chaired the launch event, which took place on October 27, 2026.
Funding and Investment Needs Highlighted
The strategy identifies a pressing need for increased financial contributions from African nations. H.E. Prof. Dr Hani Sewilam, Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, emphasized that Africa’s water security cannot rely solely on external financing. He called for stronger local investment in priority water and sanitation projects.
Furthermore, the strategy seeks to enhance private-sector participation, encouraging businesses to provide financing, technology, and expertise. The German Water Partnership, representing over 300 organizations, has expressed support for the initiative, highlighting the potential for collaboration.
