Zambia Advances Rural Electrification with Liyombe Mini-Grid Visit

Zambia is making significant strides in rural electrification through innovative energy solutions.

Recently, Zambia’s Permanent Secretary for Energy, Professor Ephraim Munshifwa, visited the Liyombe mini-grid in the Lukanga Swamps. This project has connected over 190 households to electricity and provided home solar systems to approximately 300 households, showcasing the government’s commitment to renewable energy.

Progress in Zambia’s Rural Electrification Efforts

The Liyombe mini-grid is a key component of Zambia’s strategy to enhance electricity access in remote areas. This initiative is part of the European Union-financed Increased Access to Electricity and Renewable Energy Project. It aims to provide sustainable energy solutions, aligning with the theme of the 2026 Energy Week: “Bridging the Energy Gap, Accelerating Universal Access and Industrialisation.”

By focusing on renewable energy, Zambia is addressing the energy gap and promoting industrialization. The government’s efforts are not only improving access to electricity but also setting a precedent for other African nations to follow.

Zambia: Key figures on electricity access

  • Over 190 households connected to electricity
  • Approximately 300 households gained access to home solar systems

Renewable Energy as a Model for Africa

Minister Munshifwa’s visit underscores the importance of renewable energy projects in Zambia’s development. The Copperbelt Energy Corporation PLC (CEC) has been recognized as a model for African industrialization, demonstrating the potential for transformative energy infrastructure without relying on sovereign-backed financing.

This approach could inspire other countries in Africa to adopt similar strategies for energy development, fostering regional collaboration and innovation.

Next Steps for Zambia’s Energy Initiatives

  • Continued expansion of mini-grid projects
  • Further investments in renewable energy solutions
  • Collaboration with international partners for energy infrastructure development

Zambia’s commitment to renewable energy is paving the way for a brighter, electrified future.
