Africazine:

Nissan is set to import a facelifted Navara to South Africa following the sale of its local assembly plant.

The updated Navara will retain its D23 platform and 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine, while introducing a modernized interior in higher-spec variants. The initial local range will include the SE Plus, LE Plus, and Pro-4X models, replacing several existing options.

Nissan’s Strategic Shift in South Africa

The facelifted Nissan Navara will be imported from Thailand after Nissan sold its Rosslyn assembly plant to Chery. This move marks a significant change in Nissan’s operations in South Africa, as the company transitions from local assembly to importing vehicles.

The updated Navara is expected to face challenges in gaining market share against established competitors. The model has been on the market for over 12 years, and while it retains its coil-spring rear suspension, it will not adopt the newer D27 platform used in other regions.

Key Features of the Updated Navara

The facelift includes a modern interior for higher-spec models, addressing criticisms of the current model’s dated design. However, the base model will maintain its existing interior. The new SE Plus, LE Plus, and Pro-4X variants will feature enhancements such as a new center console and gear lever, with the Pro-4X also showcasing red stitching.

The 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine remains unchanged, producing 140kW of power and 450Nm of torque, and will likely continue to be paired with the existing transmission.

Upcoming Variants and Market Position

  • Initial models will include SE Plus, LE Plus, and Pro-4X.
  • Current XE, SE, LE, Pro-2X, Pro-4X Warrior, and Stealth variants will not be offered.
  • The facelifted Navara is expected to arrive in South Africa soon.

Nissan’s facelifted Navara aims to revitalize its presence in South Africa’s competitive bakkie market.
