Lexus Launches Eighth-Generation ES Sedan with Electric Model in South Africa

Lexus has launched its eighth-generation ES luxury sedan in South Africa, marking a significant shift towards electric mobility.

The new lineup includes three models: the ES 350h EX priced at R1,051,200, the ES 350h SE at R1,232,700, and the fully electric ES 350e SE at R1,561,000. This introduction provides South African consumers with options for both hybrid and electric luxury sedans.

New Electric and Hybrid Options for South Africa

The eighth-generation ES features a self-charging hybrid and a fully electric model for the first time. The ES 350h models utilize a 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid system that produces a combined 182kW. Power is delivered to the front wheels via an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission.

In contrast, the fully electric ES 350e SE is equipped with a front-mounted electric motor generating 167kW and 268Nm. Its 74.69kWh battery offers a claimed range of up to 615km on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), with DC fast charging capable of replenishing the battery from 0% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes.

Enhanced Comfort and Technology Features

The new ES is larger than its predecessor, boasting an 80mm longer wheelbase and a 165mm increase in overall length, which enhances rear passenger space. The sedan is equipped with a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and a new multimedia interface, along with Lexus-first Hidden Switches that illuminate when the vehicle starts.

Driver assistance features include the Lexus Safety System+ 4, which offers adaptive cruise control, pre-collision assistance, lane tracing, and more. The entry-level ES 350h EX comes with a 14-inch multimedia display and a panoramic sunroof, while the ES 350h SE adds a head-up display and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson sound system.

Upcoming Features and Offerings

  • Availability of charging infrastructure through the Lexus app.
  • Home charging options via Lexus Home Charge.
  • Enhanced warranty and maintenance plans for all models.
