The Electoral Commission of South Africa is reshaping the local elections landscape.
On October 16, 2026, the IEC announced it would extend a Constitutional Court order affecting the African National Congress to 32 other political parties. This decision comes ahead of the local government elections scheduled for November 4, allowing these parties to participate despite previously missing candidate submission deadlines.
IEC’s Decision to Include More Parties
The IEC’s chairperson, Mosotho Moepya, highlighted the importance of fairness in the electoral process. The extension applies to 32 political parties that had nominated compliant candidates and paid their election deposits but failed to submit their final candidate lists on time. This move aims to uphold the principle of parity of treatment across the political spectrum.
These parties are set to contest in 121 local municipalities, impacting 107 municipalities in total. The decision necessitates the production of an additional 33 million ballots to accommodate the increased number of candidates.
Ballot Production and Compliance Requirements
Currently, 27 million ballots have been printed, with 6.6 million still pending production. The IEC is reaching out to the affected parties to confirm their participation intentions and will issue candidate certificates accordingly. This proactive approach is designed to ensure that all eligible parties can compete in the elections.
Next Steps for Affected Political Parties
- IEC to contact parties to confirm participation.
- Parties may supplement or substitute names on their candidate lists.
- Final candidate lists must comply with nomination requirements.
The IEC's decision underscores a commitment to inclusivity in South Africa's electoral process.
