In a recent initiative, the University of Pretoria’s Sci-Enza Science Centre introduced VR-based STEM experiences to learners at the Transoranje School for the Deaf. This program aims to enhance educational access for schools with limited resources, supported by funding from the Albert Wessels Trust.
University of Pretoria Enhances STEM Learning
The Sci-Enza Science Centre hosted an educational session where learners explored renewable energy concepts using virtual reality. This innovative approach allows students to engage with complex scientific ideas in an interactive environment, rather than just reading about them in textbooks.
During the session, students used VR headsets to learn about solar energy, hydroelectricity, and wind turbines. They even experienced a virtual underwater environment, which included encounters with sharks. This hands-on learning method encourages discussions and connections to their existing curriculum.
Importance of Accessible STEM Education
Puleng Tsie, manager of Sci-Enza, emphasized the importance of making STEM accessible to all learners. She stated that the goal is to inspire curiosity and broaden aspirations among students who may not have access to such experiences otherwise. The initiative aims to cultivate future innovators and problem-solvers for the community and the country.
The program is part of a broader effort to engage various schools in Pretoria, including Curro Academy Mamelodi and Laerskool Bakenkop, among others. By collaborating with the Department of Basic Education, Sci-Enza seeks to reach more students and enhance their learning experiences.
