Neale Hill, president of Ford Africa, stated that the company is already raising safety standards across its models. He highlighted that while the minimum standard in South Africa is two airbags, Ford’s entry-level model, the Territory, comes equipped with six airbags, showcasing a commitment to safety.

Neale Hill expressed the importance of aligning local vehicle safety standards with global benchmarks. He noted that the government is advancing proposed regulations that would require all new passenger cars to include airbags for all passengers. This move aims to enhance safety but raises concerns about increased production costs for manufacturers.
Hill pointed out that the automotive sector has an agreement to introduce safer cars by 2030, yet he believes there is no reason to delay these improvements. He emphasized that the technology for enhanced safety features already exists and should be deployed more rapidly.

According to TransUnion’s Quarter 1 2026 Mobility Insights Report, passenger vehicle sales reached 114,517 units, with a year-on-year growth of 12.6%.
