ELDOWAS and Africa Water Ambassadors Partner to Support Farmers in Elgeyo Marakwet

The Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company is taking significant steps to enhance irrigation access in Elgeyo Marakwet County.

In a recent partnership with Africa Water Ambassadors, ELDOWAS signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support the excavation and lining of water pans for 25 farmers. This initiative aims to improve access to affordable irrigation water and strengthen climate-resilient agriculture.

ELDOWAS Partners with Africa Water Ambassadors

The collaboration was formalized on September 2, 2026, with ELDOWAS Managing Director CPA Dr. Lawrence Tanui and Africa Water Ambassadors Chairman Brian Misiati signing the MoU. The project will prioritize youth, women, and persons with disabilities, ensuring that vulnerable groups benefit from improved irrigation resources.

Under this agreement, Africa Water Ambassadors will finance the excavation of the water pans and cover 20% of the cost of the liners. ELDOWAS will contribute the remaining 80% and provide essential technical support for siting, installation, and monitoring of the water pans.

Impact on Local Farmers and Agriculture

This partnership is expected to enhance the livelihoods of farmers in Elgeyo Marakwet County by providing them with reliable access to irrigation water. Improved irrigation facilities will support climate-resilient agricultural practices, which are crucial in the face of changing weather patterns.

ELDOWAS has emphasized its commitment to protecting water resources and empowering communities through strategic partnerships. The collaboration with Africa Water Ambassadors is part of a broader initiative involving the Water Funds for Africa and The Nature Conservancy in Africa.

Next Steps for the Project

  • Excavation of water pans to begin following the MoU signing.
  • Monitoring and technical support to be provided by ELDOWAS.
  • Focus on involving youth, women, and persons with disabilities in the project.

This partnership marks a significant advancement in supporting sustainable agriculture in Elgeyo Marakwet County.
