Vlada se pripravlja na superreferendumski dan 11. oktobra

Slovenia is gearing up for a series of significant referendums this autumn.

Following the elections, the government coalition led by Janez Janša is preparing for a busy legislative period. A civil society group submitted over 44,000 signatures for a legislative referendum regarding the coalition’s amendments to the parliamentary investigation law. In response, several parliamentary groups proposed advisory referendums, including one on the abolition of mandatory RTV contributions.

Upcoming Referendums Set for October 11

The proposed referendums are scheduled for October 11, marking a pivotal day for Slovenian democracy. Among the issues to be voted on is the controversial amendment to the parliamentary investigation law, which critics argue undermines legal protections for individuals under investigation. This amendment was passed by the coalition with support from the Resnica party.

Additionally, citizens will vote on the so-called “political police” law, which has raised concerns about potential abuses of power. The referendum questions will directly address these legislative changes, allowing the public to voice their opinions on critical governance issues.

Context of Legislative Changes and Public Response

The coalition’s recent legislative efforts have sparked significant public interest and concern. The amendments to the parliamentary investigation law are seen as a threat to civil liberties, as they limit the ability of individuals to seek legal protection during investigations. This has prompted civil society to mobilize and push for a referendum to challenge the government’s actions.

As the political landscape evolves, the upcoming referendums will serve as a litmus test for the coalition’s popularity and the public’s stance on these contentious issues. The involvement of various political groups indicates a robust debate surrounding governance and accountability in Slovenia.

Next Steps for the Referendums

  • Signature collection for the referendum on intervention measures begins on September 1.
  • Referendum questions will be finalized ahead of the October 11 voting date.
  • Public campaigns will likely intensify as the referendum date approaches.

Slovenia’s upcoming referendums will shape the future of its governance and civil rights.
