South Africa’s Gyrocopter community is thriving, showcasing a blend of aviation passion and safety.
The South African Gyro Pilots Association (SAGPA) plays a crucial role in promoting safety and unity among gyrocopter enthusiasts. With an estimated 300 gyrocopters in the country, about 180 are flown regularly, highlighting the growing interest in this unique aviation sector.
Kitty Hawk: The Heart of Gyrocopter Aviation
Kitty Hawk aerodrome, located just 30km southeast of Pretoria, serves as a central hub for gyrocopter pilots. The airfield is privately owned and offers excellent facilities for aircraft owners, welcoming both members and non-members without landing fees. The availability of AVGAS and MOGAS fuel seven days a week further supports the vibrant aviation community.
This year, Kitty Hawk hosted 32 gyrocopters, just shy of the record 33. The annual fly-in event also featured a spot landing competition, adding excitement to the gathering. Participants enjoyed various awards, including recognition for the best landing and the prettiest gyrocopter.
