The Electoral Commission reported over 290,000 first-time registrations during its final voter registration drive. Currently, more than 29 million South Africans are registered to vote in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for November 4.

The Electoral Commission concluded its final voter registration drive this past weekend, marking a notable achievement with over 290,000 first-time registrations. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance voter participation ahead of the local government elections.
IEC CEO Sy Mamabolo expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of both registration drives, highlighting that they collectively resulted in close to 4.7 million interactions with voters. This figure is a significant increase compared to the 1.7 million transactions recorded during the 2021 local government elections, which were affected by COVID-19 restrictions.
Impact of Voter Registration Drives on Voter Roll
The two voter registration weekends held in June and August 2026 contributed a total of 754,332 new voters. This growth is crucial as it adds to the ongoing expansion of the voters’ roll in preparation for the upcoming elections.
