China and the UN are reinforcing their partnership to bolster Sierra Leone’s development goals.
During a recent meeting in Freetown, UN Resident Coordinator Seraphine Wakana and Chinese Ambassador Zhao Yong discussed collaboration in key areas such as agriculture, health, and education. Wakana emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts to advance Sierra Leone’s national development agenda, particularly during its tenure as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council from 2024 to 2025.
Strengthening Agricultural Development in Sierra Leone
Wakana highlighted the critical role of agriculture in Sierra Leone’s development strategy. She called for enhanced cooperation with China to support agricultural initiatives, which are part of the country’s “Big Five Game Changers.” This collaboration aims to improve food security and boost the agricultural sector.
In response, Zhao reaffirmed China’s commitment to assist Sierra Leone, mentioning the upcoming arrival of the 15th batch of Chinese agricultural experts. These experts will provide essential support to enhance agricultural practices and productivity.
Sustainable Development Goals and Partnerships
The discussions also touched on the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2025-2030, which aligns with Sierra Leone’s Medium-Term National Development Plan for 2024-2030. This framework aims to address various development priorities, including health, education, and peacebuilding.
Wakana stressed the need for stronger national data systems to facilitate evidence-based policymaking. This approach is vital for effective development planning and ensuring that initiatives meet the needs of the population.
