Samsung’s latest foldable smartphones are set to hit South Africa with hefty price tags.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at R32,000, while the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is priced at approximately R35,400. Higher storage options push the prices even further, with the 512GB Fold 8 costing R40,999 and the Fold 8 Ultra reaching R50,999.

Samsung’s New Foldable Phones Launch in South Africa

Samsung has unveiled its Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, introducing cutting-edge foldable technology to South African consumers. The entry-level Fold 8 is priced at R32,000, while the larger Ultra model starts at R35,400. These prices reflect the premium nature of foldable devices compared to traditional smartphones.

For context, Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro starts at R27,999, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max at R30,699, highlighting the competitive landscape of high-end smartphones. The Fold 8 weighs 201g, making it lighter than the 215g Fold 8 Ultra, which features an 8-inch display.

Both Samsung models offer nearly identical performance, with 256GB of storage and 12GB of RAM. However, rising prices are attributed to global shortages of RAM and storage components, driven by increasing demands from AI technologies. As consumers rely more on memory-intensive applications, the cost of high-spec devices is expected to rise.

Upcoming Availability and Expectations

  • Pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra open on August 12.
  • General availability in South Africa begins on August 13.
  • Future price increases may occur due to ongoing component shortages.

Samsung's new foldable phones bring innovation but at a steep cost for South African consumers.
