The Lagos State Waterways Authority is advancing ferry safety training in Africa.

In partnership with Interferry, LASWA has completed Module Two of the Ferry Safety Development Programme, which emphasized seamanship training for ferry professionals. This module included hands-on training and expert sessions, enhancing the skills of 50 participants.

Training Enhancements for Ferry Professionals

The June module of the Ferry Safety Development Programme focused on essential skills such as ropes and knots, mooring and anchoring, and deck maintenance. Participants engaged in a blend of self-paced learning, virtual mentoring, and practical field exercises to strengthen their technical knowledge and operational skills.

On June 17, 2026, participants attended an “Ask the Expert” session with Mr. Jeff Joyce, who provided insights on maritime safety and leadership. This session was part of the comprehensive training designed to elevate ferry operations across Africa.

Lagos State’s Commitment to Safety Culture

The practical training took place on June 24 at Sea School, Apapa, where participants practiced rope identification, handling, knot tying, and line management. Led by Engr. Ukeme Sunday and supported by seven maritime instructors, this hands-on approach aimed to expose participants to real operational conditions and global safety standards.

LASWA’s initiative is not just about skill enhancement; it aims to foster a stronger safety culture in Africa’s inland waterways. The programme is a significant step towards developing the next generation of ferry professionals on the continent.

Next Steps in Ferry Safety Training

  • Module Three will focus on ferry safety and emergency preparedness.
  • Risk management and international safety best practices will be covered.
  • The programme is part of an 18-month initiative aimed at ferry professional development.

LASWA is setting the standard for ferry safety training in Africa.
