A recent study identified Cape Town, Gqeberha, Durban, Pretoria, and Johannesburg as top contenders in Africa’s liveability rankings. Cape Town and Gqeberha secured second and third places, respectively, with notable scores in quality of life and healthcare.

South Africa’s Top Cities for Quality of Life

The study evaluated cities based on quality of life, health, safety, and cost of living. Cape Town and Gqeberha excelled in quality of life and healthcare, although their safety scores were lower. Cape Town’s cost of living is particularly high, recorded at 1.80.

Durban, Pretoria, and Johannesburg followed closely, ranking sixth, seventh, and eighth. Durban and Johannesburg received decent scores for quality of life, while Pretoria achieved a healthcare score of 67.

Key Factors Behind Liveability Rankings

Kigali topped the list overall, praised for its high healthcare and safety scores, alongside a low cost of living of 4.80. A travel analyst noted that Kigali’s balance of affordability and safety contributes significantly to its liveability.
