Lagos Government Urges Nature-Based Solutions for Climate Change Action

The Lagos State Government is urging immediate action on climate change through nature-based solutions. This call comes during the global celebration of World Environment Day.

At the 2026 event, Special Adviser to the Governor on the Environment, Engr. Olalekan Rotimi-Akodu, emphasized the importance of natural ecosystems in combating climate change. He highlighted that urban areas, particularly Lagos, are facing severe climate impacts, including extreme heat and flooding.

Lagos Advocates for Nature-Based Climate Solutions

During the 2026 World Environment Day celebration, Lagos State officials underscored the urgent need for nature-based solutions to address climate challenges. Engr. Rotimi-Akodu pointed out that forests, wetlands, and green spaces play a vital role in helping communities adapt to climate change. He noted that urban heat challenges are intensifying, with 2024 recorded as the warmest year globally.

Rotimi-Akodu warned that rising temperatures threaten public health and overall quality of life in Lagos, Africa’s most populous city. The government is aligning its local efforts with the global campaign on extreme heat, promoting the theme “50 Cities at 50°C: Lagos Rising Against the Urban Heat Island.”

Lagos’ Strategic Interventions for Climate Resilience

The Lagos State Government is implementing various strategic interventions to enhance climate resilience. These include investments in an integrated multimodal transportation system, such as the Lagos Rail Mass Transit and expanded water transport services. These initiatives aim to reduce emissions and improve air quality.

Additionally, the state has launched an extensive greening program, planting over seven million trees since 2009. This initiative has transformed abandoned spaces into green areas, showcasing the power of collective action in building climate resilience.

Upcoming Initiatives and Commitments

  • Lagos will plant 500 trees under the “Me and My Tree” initiative.
  • A cash prize of ₦2.5 million will be awarded for the best-performing tree after one year.
  • Lagos will formally sign the UNEP “50 Cities at 50°C” pledge.

Lagos is taking proactive steps to combat climate change and enhance urban resilience.
