Joburg Engages Community to Advance Hostel Revitalisation Programme

The City of Joburg is advancing its Hostel Revitalisation Programme to improve living conditions in its hostels.

On Sunday, 28 June, the MMC for Human Settlements, Councillor Mlungisi Mabaso, will introduce the project team responsible for implementing this initiative at Meadowlands Hall in Soweto. This follows the city’s approval of the Hostel Revitalisation Unitary Plan and Overlay Strategy, aimed at transforming aging hostel facilities into modern family housing developments.

Joburg’s Commitment to Housing Transformation

The Hostel Revitalisation Programme is designed to tackle long-standing housing challenges in Johannesburg. It aims to convert hostels into family-friendly accommodations and promote wealth creation through pathways to homeownership. The city plans to utilize strategically located land to support the development of new housing projects.

In addition to improving living conditions, the initiative seeks to establish a standardized planning framework that will attract investment and encourage private-sector partnerships. This comprehensive approach is expected to unlock economic opportunities for residents and surrounding communities.

Key Objectives of the Revitalisation Programme

Among the key objectives of the Hostel Revitalisation Programme are the conversion of hostels into family-friendly accommodation and the promotion of wealth creation. The city has already completed several preparatory stages, including policy development and stakeholder consultations.

The Joburg Development Agency (JDA) has appointed a specialist project team to drive the implementation forward. This appointment is seen as a significant milestone, allowing hostel leaders to engage directly with the implementation team.
