President Hakainde Hichilema is set to sign significant legislation that will reshape education and pensions in Zambia.

On June 4, 2026, Hichilema will enact five Bills aimed at protecting free education and reforming the pension system. This move follows the successful return of 2.6 million children to school since the introduction of free education in January 2022.

Zambia’s Commitment to Free Education

The Education (Amendment) Bill is a cornerstone of the UPND government’s policy, ensuring that future generations benefit from free education. This legislation aims to secure the educational gains made since its inception, reinforcing the government’s commitment to accessible education for all children.

With 2.6 million children now back in classrooms, the government is taking steps to ensure that this progress continues. The signing of this Bill is a pivotal moment for Zambia’s educational landscape.

Zambia’s Pension Reforms: Immediate Benefits for Retirees

The pension reforms will significantly impact workers and retirees. Starting tomorrow, the minimum pension will increase from K1,861 to K2,327, benefiting over 17,000 current pensioners immediately. This increase is part of a broader effort to enhance the financial security of retirees.

Additionally, around 30,000 retirees will have access to an advance lump sum of up to K17,500. These changes are designed to improve the overall management and growth of savings within the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA), affecting approximately 1.2 million members.

Next Steps for Zambia’s Legislative Changes
