Egypt’s education reforms are showing promising results, with student attendance surging dramatically.
Recent evaluations indicate that student attendance in Egyptian schools has risen to 87 percent from just 15 percent. This improvement follows a series of reforms aimed at enhancing classroom participation, learning outcomes, and school capacity, as reported by Egypt’s Ministry of Education.
Significant Rise in Student Attendance in Egypt
The UNICEF-supported evaluation highlights the impact of reforms on student attendance. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Education Minister Mohamed Abdel-Latif reviewed these findings, which underscore efforts to reduce overcrowding and improve the quality of education. The reforms have successfully restored regular attendance and enhanced classroom engagement.
Moreover, primary-school class density has decreased from about 63 students to 41 students per classroom. This reduction, along with a 33 percent increase in teaching capacity, has created more effective learning conditions across the public education system.
Key Improvements in Literacy and Learning Quality
The evaluation also reveals significant gains in literacy rates. The proportion of students with weak reading and writing skills has dropped from 45.5 percent to 13.9 percent, thanks to a national program focused on foundational skills. These improvements are crucial for developing Egypt’s future workforce and enhancing productivity.
Policymakers recognize that better educational performance is vital for the country’s long-term economic competitiveness. The ongoing reforms aim to address persistent challenges in the public-school system, ensuring that students receive a quality education.
Next Steps for Sustaining Educational Gains
- Continued investment in teachers and educational infrastructure.
- Focus on maintaining educational quality amid growing enrollment pressures.
Egypt’s education reforms are beginning to yield positive outcomes, but sustaining these gains will require ongoing commitment and resources.
