Ho Chi Minh City is on a transformative path to become a mega-city by 2050, targeting a population of 20-22 million. This ambitious plan aims to enhance the city’s livability while driving economic growth.
The municipal People’s Committee has approved a master plan for 2021-2050, covering an area of about 6,772.59 square kilometers. The plan includes developing regional connectivity with neighboring provinces and focuses on sustainable urban development, aiming for a gross regional domestic product (GRDP) of around .2 trillion by 2050.
Ho Chi Minh City’s Vision for 2050
The master plan outlines a vision for Ho Chi Minh City to become one of the world’s most livable cities. It emphasizes a multi-centered mega-city model, which will include a focus on international finance, high-quality services, and high technology.
Additionally, the plan aims to balance economic growth with environmental protection and social equity. By 2050, the city aspires to be among the top 100 cities globally for quality of life.
Key Infrastructure Developments
To support its growth, Ho Chi Minh City will implement a “three regions – three corridors” framework. This includes a north-south corridor along the Saigon River, an eastern corridor linking Ba Ria-Vung Tau with Can Gio, and an east-west corridor connecting Dong Nai and Tay Ninh.
The southern coastal corridor is expected to be a major development axis, enhancing connectivity between the Mekong Delta and southeastern Vietnam. This area will host logistics cities, airport cities, and eco-urban developments.
Next Steps for Urban Transformation
- Study optimal travel distance and mobility patterns for residents.
- Expand public transport infrastructure, including metro lines and light rail transit.
- Implement transit-oriented development linked to public transportation systems.
Ho Chi Minh City's ambitious plan sets the stage for a transformative future, aiming for sustainable growth and enhanced livability.
