Egypt is taking bold steps to enhance its renewable energy landscape, aiming for a significant shift in its power generation strategy.

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has reviewed plans to increase the share of clean energy in Egypt’s national power mix to 45 per cent by 2028. This commitment was discussed during a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat, who provided updates on various renewable projects.

Egypt’s Ambitious Renewable Energy Goals

During the meeting, the leaders highlighted several large-scale solar and wind initiatives. Notable projects include the second phase of the 500-megawatt solar plant in Nag Hammadi, expected to connect to the grid in May, and a 900-megawatt wind farm set for completion in 2027. Additionally, a 1,700-megawatt solar complex in Minya is a crucial component of Egypt’s renewable energy expansion.

These projects are part of a broader strategy to diversify energy sources and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The focus on renewable energy aligns with global trends towards sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Egypt: Key figures on renewable energy capacity

  • 45 per cent clean energy share by 2028
  • 500-megawatt solar plant in Nag Hammadi
