Transport Minister urges responsible road use during Easter holidays

South Africa is ramping up road safety measures as the Easter holiday approaches.

Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy has called on South Africans to travel responsibly during this busy period. Authorities are deploying increased law enforcement operations across major routes to manage the anticipated surge in traffic and ensure compliance with road regulations.

Increased Road Safety Measures for Easter

Minister Creecy emphasized the importance of collective responsibility among law enforcement, motorists, and road users to maintain accident-free roads. The heightened enforcement includes deploying mobile and static checkpoints, supported by the National Traffic Police and the South African Police Service.

Authorities will monitor areas near entertainment venues to prevent intoxicated pedestrians from crossing major highways. This initiative aims to protect passengers and other road users while ensuring compliance with permit conditions and safety regulations.

Traffic Surge Anticipated on Major Routes

With the Easter holiday approaching, South African highways are expected to experience heavy traffic. Major routes like the N1, N12, and N3 are likely to see significant volumes as motorists travel for the holiday. Authorities are urging caution and adherence to road safety regulations to minimize accidents.

Next Steps for Road Safety Enforcement

  • Deployment of mobile and static checkpoints nationwide.
  • Increased visibility of law enforcement on major routes.
  • Monitoring of entertainment venues to prevent intoxicated crossings.

South Africa is prioritizing road safety this Easter to protect all travelers.
