Egypt Upgrades National Grid for 2.8 GW Wind Energy Capacity

Share

Africazine:

Egypt is enhancing its national grid to support a significant increase in wind energy capacity.

The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) is collaborating with Kharafi National to install two 500 kV gas-insulated switchgear units at the West Bakr substation. This upgrade will enable the grid to absorb and distribute 2.8 GW of new wind energy from the Gulf of Suez.

Egypt’s Wind Energy Corridor Expansion

The Gulf of Suez is emerging as Egypt’s primary wind energy corridor. This region is set to see multi-GW pipelines come online over the next five years. The projects led by Orascom Construction, Scatec, and Masdar are expected to be completed within 12 to 14 months.

As more renewable power sources are integrated, the readiness of the grid has become a critical focus for Egypt. The upgrades are essential to ensure that the infrastructure can handle the influx of energy from these new wind projects.
