Egypt is advancing its strategic energy partnership with Russia through a significant nuclear power project.
Egypt’s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, and Nikolai Shulginov, Chairman of the Russian Duma Committee on Energy, recently discussed the ambitious billion nuclear power project. This initiative, a joint venture with Russia’s state nuclear company Rosatom, aims to construct a facility near El Dabaa that will generate over 10% of Egypt’s electricity needs.
Egypt and Russia Strengthen Nuclear Energy Ties
The nuclear power project has been in development for over a decade, with an agreement signed in 2015. The facility will feature four 1.2-gigawatt VVER reactors, designed to power approximately 20 million people. This project is a cornerstone of Egypt’s energy strategy, aimed at diversifying its energy sources and enhancing national energy security.
During President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Cairo in 2017, further agreements were established, including plans for a nuclear fuel storage facility to be reprocessed in Russia. The project’s initial timeline included a test run for the first reactor in 2022, with full commissioning expected by 2026 and overall completion between 2028 and 2029.
Recent Developments in Project Implementation
Recent discussions between Egyptian officials and the Russian delegation focused on accelerating the project’s implementation and improving coordination among joint work teams. The Russian delegation’s visit to the construction site highlighted the project’s strategic importance and the commitment to international safety and efficiency standards.
The Electricity Ministry emphasized that innovative engineering solutions are being employed to ensure the facility meets the highest standards for safety and environmental protection. This project is crucial for Egypt’s transition to a more sustainable energy mix.
Next Steps for the Nuclear Power Project
- Continue accelerating project implementation.
- Enhance coordination among joint work teams.
- Monitor progress towards the first reactor test run.
This nuclear power project is set to transform Egypt’s energy landscape and enhance its energy security.
