Nguyen Van Tai’s shift to cycling for his daily commute highlights a growing trend towards sustainable transportation in urban areas.

After relying on a car or motorbike, Tai began cycling to work from Nha Be Commune about a week ago. His journey covers around 20 kilometres, extending to 30 kilometres for meetings or classes, and he expects to save roughly VND 5 million (about USD 195) per month.

Nguyen Van Tai Embraces Cycling for Commuting

At 35, Tai works at a technology distribution firm and has made a significant lifestyle change by cycling to work. He leaves home around 7.30 am to accommodate his longer journey. To prepare, he carries work essentials, water, gloves, and sun protection, ensuring he arrives at the office ready for the day.

Using an electric-assist bicycle, Tai finds that cycling reduces physical strain, especially on longer routes and bridges. He appreciates the more relaxed experience compared to driving, allowing him to enjoy the morning air and view the city from a different perspective.

Financial Benefits of Cycling to Work

The switch to cycling has led to substantial savings for Tai. Previously, he spent about VND 850,000 per week on fuel and around VND 400,000 on parking, with costs rising on busy days. Now, he anticipates saving around VND 5 million monthly, a significant reduction in his commuting expenses.

Tai’s decision to cycle has also made his commute more flexible, enabling him to stop for breakfast or coffee, which was less convenient when driving. Despite some drawbacks, such as limited storage and planning for rain or battery range, he believes the benefits far outweigh the inconveniences.

Future Plans for Cycling Commute

  • Tai plans to continue cycling as a cost-effective commuting option.
  • He views cycling as a valuable opportunity for daily exercise.
  • Tai is open to meeting business partners while cycling, even at upscale venues.

Cycling is not just a mode of transport for Tai; it’s a lifestyle choice that brings financial and health benefits.
