Egypt Begins Loading New LNG Cargo for Foreign Partners at Idku Facility

Africazine:

Egypt is ramping up its liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports amid declining domestic production.

The country has begun loading a new LNG cargo at the Idku liquefaction facility for foreign partners. The LNG carrier MARAN GAS ANTIBES arrived at the terminal to lift a shipment, following its previous discharge at the Port of Aqaba in Jordan.

Egypt’s LNG Export Strategy Takes Shape

The Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) is managing the shipment, which is part of a broader strategy to secure energy supplies. The government has recently allowed foreign oil and gas partners to export portions of their gas entitlements through Egypt’s LNG facilities. This marks a significant shift from the previous arrangement where the Egyptian government was the sole exporter of LNG.

This new framework provides greater operational flexibility for international stakeholders, enabling them to ship newly added gas volumes starting this year. Previously, export proceeds were primarily used to settle outstanding dues owed to foreign partners.

Egypt: Key figures on LNG Operations

  • 1.35 billion cubic feet per day – combined capacity of Idku LNG
  • 750 million cubic feet per day – capacity of Damietta LNG

Expansion of LNG Imports and Infrastructure

In addition to boosting exports, Egypt has expanded its LNG imports. The government has signed contracts to lease five regasification units to enhance supply security, responding to elevated domestic consumption levels. The Energos Force FSRU, leased in the second half of 2025, plays a crucial role in this strategy by converting LNG back into gas for distribution.

Next Steps for Egypt’s LNG Sector

  • Continue loading LNG shipments for foreign partners
  • Implement the new export framework with international stakeholders
  • Monitor domestic consumption levels and adjust import strategies accordingly

Egypt is positioning itself as a key player in the LNG market, adapting to both domestic and international energy needs.
