Exciting Advances in National Identity: Burkina Faso's Biometric Identity Card Rollout
Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso – December 1, 2025 – In a significant step towards enhancing national identification systems, Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouedraogo proudly received his Sahel Confederation Biometric Identity Card (CIB-AES) today, marking a pivotal moment in Burkina Faso's commitment to improving civic infrastructure.
The Minister welcomed a technical team from the National Identification Office (ONI) to his office this morning as part of the registration process for the new biometric identity card. Following a streamlined registration process, he successfully obtained his CIB-AES, a crucial document intended to enhance trust and security within the identification framework of the region.
The CIB-AES is not merely a card; it reflects modern technological advancements. Crafted from durable polycarbonate and equipped with cutting-edge security features, the identity card is designed to meet and exceed international standards for reliability and data protection. According to the Burkina Information Agency, this innovative identity card is pivotal in safeguarding personal information against misuse while providing a seamless identification experience for citizens.
On the same day, Burkina Faso’s Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traore, also received his CIB-AES, showing unified leadership in this progressive initiative. This biometric card will be invaluable as the government aims to establish a more organized and accessible identification system for all citizens.
Starting from January 2026, residents of the Association of Sahel (AES) region, including children aged five and above, will be able to apply for their own CIB-AES. For a modest fee of 3,500 FCFA, every citizen will have the opportunity to access this important document, which is valid for ten years, thereby ensuring ongoing identification security.
As Burkina Faso strides forward with this new biometric system, it sets an inspiring example for other African nations looking to modernize their civic infrastructure. The rollout not only epitomizes progress for Burkina Faso but also encapsulates the regional collaboration aimed at establishing robust identification protocols across the Sahel.
This initiative is a noteworthy stride towards improving national integrity and security in identification processes, showcasing Burkina Faso’s commitment to embracing technology for the benefit of its citizens.
