Eswatini Steps into Solar Power: A Bright New Era for Energy Independence
In a significant stride towards energy independence, the Kingdom of Eswatini has officially launched its very first solar power plant—the Tsamela Solar Power Plant. With an estimated investment surpassing 400 million emalangeni (roughly US.5 million), this project promises to generate approximately 47,788 MWh in its inaugural year. Financing for the Tsamela Solar Power Plant is carefully structured, led by Standard Bank to provide debt financing, while ensuring local engagement by allocating 30% of equity to local investors and sourcing 30% of the debt locally. This strategy not only promotes local investment but also fosters a sense of ownership among Eswatini’s citizens, paving the way for future renewable energy ventures. The plant has secured a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC), ensuring long-term viability and stability for its operations.
