Djibouti’s Port Innovation: New Tugboats Set to Enhance Maritime Operations

In an exciting development for the maritime sector, the Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority recently introduced two state-of-the-art tugboats, marking a significant milestone for the nation’s ambitious infrastructural growth. Held on Sunday at the old port, the inauguration ceremony attracted prominent figures, including the Authority’s President, Aboubaker Omar Hadi, who emphasized the importance of this enhancement in ensuring the port’s future competitiveness.

The newly launched tugboats, named after former key officials Farah Hassan Ragueh and Saad Warsama Dirieh, are not just any ordinary vessels. Each tugboat is powered by an impressive 6,800 horsepower, specifically designed to safely navigate and assist large cargo ships as they enter and exit the bustling port waters. These high-performance machines are capable of maneuvering ships between 370 and 390 meters in length, accommodating vessels with a draft of up to 18 meters—a significant upgrade from the previous tugboats, which managed only 1,800 horsepower and limited operations to vessels of 170 meters.

This investment comes at a crucial time, as Djibouti’s ports have evolved dramatically in recent years. In just two decades, the capacity for container shipping has skyrocketed, with ports now able to handle vessels carrying up to 23,000 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units)—a stark increase from just 6,500 TEU. Such advancements not only boost the efficiency of port operations but also position Djibouti as a key player in the regional maritime industry.

The launch of these modern tugboats is part of a long-term strategic investment plan that spans over 20 years, with a robust investment of over 8 million dedicated to improving tugboats, pilot vessels, and patrol boats within Djibouti’s waters. The cost of the latest tugboats stands at approximately .74 million each, further highlighting the nation’s commitment to enhancing maritime safety and efficiency.

As the Djiboutian authorities work diligently to expand their port capabilities, this investment reflects a commitment to economic growth, regional connectivity, and the promotion of Djibouti as an essential hub for international trade. For those interested in the pulse of Africa’s ever-evolving trade landscape, this latest development is certainly one to watch.
