University of Antananarivo Embraces Renewable Energy with New Solar Initiative

The University of Antananarivo is stepping into a brighter and more sustainable future with the recent installation of 370 solar panels, each boasting a capacity of 590 W, along with 40 solar inverters and 60 state-of-the-art batteries. This generous donation, which was made possible by the Presidency of the Refoundation of the Republic, is a significant boost toward the university’s goal of achieving energy independence, covering an impressive 85% of the campus’s electricity needs.

On December 7, 2025, the initiative was unveiled at the university’s Ambohitsaina campus, showcasing a commitment to enhancing the overall educational environment. The introduction of solar energy not only provides continuous power supply but also ensures that students and faculty can partake in their activities without interruption, even during typical power outages.

But that’s not all! To enhance campus safety and visibility, the university also received 1,500 new streetlights, turning previously dim areas into well-lit and secure spaces. This is a huge step forward in improving the conditions under which students and staff can learn and work. Safety is paramount, and this initiative is designed with that thought at the forefront.

Additionally, the initiative emphasizes modern infrastructure by incorporating 144 surveillance cameras for absolute peace of mind and gifting the university 100 computers to streamline administrative processes. President Michaël Randrianirina, during his visit to the university, announced that this initiative is just the beginning, with plans to equip all universities in Madagascar with similar renewable energy solutions. This forward-thinking program also extends to water supply, aiming to promote sustainability throughout the nation.

Looking beyond education, the government’s ambitions don’t stop there. Plans are already in motion to install solar panels in various government ministries and administrative offices, with the Iavoloha Palace set to receive 500 kW panels soon. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to harness renewable energy across Madagascar, paving the way for an environmentally conscious future.

As the world increasingly turns its attention toward sustainable practices, Madagascar’s focus on renewable energy sets an inspiring precedent for other nations. Join us in following the progress of this green revolution as it unfolds!
