Advancing Electoral Integrity: AI Takes Center Stage at Dakar Symposium
In a significant step forward for democratic processes in West Africa, Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah, the Chairperson of Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC), has embarked on an important mission to Dakar, Senegal. She is joined by NEC IT Deputy Director Edna Freeman as they attend the 2025 ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) Symposium, anchored on the compelling theme: “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Electoral Integrity.” This event, facilitated by ECONEC in collaboration with Yiaga Africa, aims to explore innovative applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to bolster the credibility of elections across the region.
The symposium gathers an impressive cohort of Electoral Management Body (EMB) leaders, technology experts, representatives from civil society, and key partners from various regional organizations. Together, they are focused on unearthing effective strategies for integrating AI into the electoral framework. As the session unfolds, the emphasis will be on how AI technologies can enhance transparency, operational efficiency, and maintain the integrity of electoral processes.
During the opening ceremony on November 12, Mr. Abdullah Sylla, Chairman of Senegal’s Commission Electorale Nationale Autonome (CENA), passionately encouraged EMBs to embrace the digital revolution. “As we navigate through a world that is rapidly digitizing, it is imperative for us to harness the expertise within the ECONEC region and beyond. We must assess our electoral systems and develop robust policies for the integration of AI technologies,” he remarked.
The conclusion of the symposium on November 13 promises to set the stage for a crucial evolution in electoral management, with a new leadership team for ECONEC expected to be elected.
