MEL Oil and Gas Exploration Takes Big Leap with New Survey

In an exciting development for Namibia’s energy sector, MEL Oil and Gas Exploration (MELN), a subsidiary of Monitor Exploration Limited, has announced a significant initiative aimed at enhancing its oil drilling prospects in the Owambo Basin. The company has contracted South Africa’s Xcalibur to conduct an exhaustive airborne magnetic, radiometric, and scalar gravity survey over a significant portion of its PEL 93 Joint Venture area, a crucial step as they prepare for drilling operations slated to begin in late 2026.

This comprehensive survey, set to kick off in January 2026, will mark the final phase of data collection before MELN commences its drilling activities. Utilizing advanced geophysical data, including a prior 200-kilometre 2D seismic survey completed in 2024, the new data will allow experts to fine-tune the locations of potential drilling targets, maximizing the venture’s chances for success. The anticipated processed and interpreted results of the survey will be available by the end of February 2026.

In a statement reflecting the company’s commitment to leveraging technology for sustainability, MELN noted, “The survey is the final element to be integrated with existing geological and geophysical datasets… to select locations for our drilling programme.” This approach underscores a focused strategy aimed at responsible and efficient exploration in Namibia’s promising energy landscape.

Community engagement has been a cornerstone of the project, with preparations for the survey having commenced in mid-2025. These efforts include obtaining necessary amendments to the Environmental Clearance Certificate that allows for airborne operations, highlighting the company’s dedication to safeguarding local interests while pursuing its business objectives.

Moreover, Xcalibur will deploy a state-of-the-art single-engine Air Tractor aircraft outfitted with their advanced XMAG system, designed for high precision and resilience against flight disturbances. Covering approximately 6,000 line kilometres, the aircraft will not only perform the magnetic survey but will also utilize an innovative gravity gradiometer capable of detecting even the slightest gravitational changes.

The PEL 93 Joint Venture, which consists of MEL Oil & Gas Exploration (55%), 88 Energy Limited (20%), Legend Oil Namibia (15%), and NAMCOR (10%), reflects a collaborative effort in driving Namibia’s energy sector forward. This initiative illustrates the potential for positive growth and development within Namibia’s natural resource sector and highlights the country’s capacity to attract international partnerships aimed at tapping into its rich geological resources.

As the energy landscape continues to evolve, Namibia positions itself as a growing hub for exploration and innovation, signaling promising times ahead for oil and gas sector stakeholders.
