Empowering Young Minds: First Lady Lordina Dramani Mahama Visits St Mary’s Junior High School in Accra
In a heartwarming display of support for education, Her Excellency the First Lady, Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama, made a thoughtful visit to St Mary’s Basic and Junior High School in Korle Gonno, Accra. The importance of education was vividly highlighted as Mrs. Mahama presented essential learning materials, such as exercise books, water bottles, pencil holders, rulers, and a plethora of writing tools including pencils, erasers, and colored pencils. She underscored her commitment to education as the founder of the Lordina Foundation and as an ambassador for the Educating Linda Programme, a partnership with the Merck Foundation. This initiative aims to help disadvantaged girls remain in school and complete their education.
“This programme is close to my heart,” she said with passion. “Education transforms individuals, families, communities, and nations.” Through this emotional connection to education, twenty exceptional girls were awarded scholarships to further their educational journeys, alleviating some financial burdens and empowering them to focus on their studies.
Patience Addy, the headmistress of St Mary’s Junior High, expressed her gratitude for the generous support from both the Lordina Foundation and the Merck Foundation. She shared that these scholarships serve as a beacon of inspiration for girls to excel academically.
Additionally, Martha Breh from the Greater Accra Metro Education Office commended the initiative, stating that it is bound to motivate girls to pursue their dreams with unwavering determination. The scholarship recipient, Miss Emelia Mensah, shared her heartfelt gratitude, noting that the assistance provided a much-needed relief, allowing her to concentrate fully on her education.
