 has significantly amplified its partnership with Slum Dwellers International (SDI). This incredible organization, which boasts affiliates in over 30 countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America, is dedicated to improving living conditions in informal settlements. Recently, Shiela Muganyi from SDI–Zimbabwe graced the Cornell campus, enriching students’ understanding of urban challenges and community mobilization.</p>
<p>Shiela’s visits included interactive seminars, lecture sessions, and collaborative workshops, all under the guidance of Architecture Assistant Professor Felix Heisel. During her time, she shared her firsthand experiences that vividly illustrated the transformative work of SDI. Her insights focused on the community-driven approach to tackling issues such as inadequate sanitation, unreliable water supply, and limited educational opportunities.</p>
<p>Originating from Dzivarasekwa, a vibrant informal settlement in Harare, Zimbabwe, Shiela’s life journey hasn’t been easy. Growing up amidst challenges such as the lack of essential services and familial responsibilities, she exemplifies resilience and determination. Shiela’s story took a turn when she became involved with SDI, initially stepping in for her mother—an act that ignited her passion for community work.</p>
<p>At SDI, Shiela quickly progressed from a community mobilizer to one of the pioneering figures in developing community savings groups, focusing on empowering local voices to openly communicate with authorities. Her work also paved the way for innovative initiatives like the Harare Slum Upgrading Finance Facility, which coordinates resources to enhance living standards in urban areas.</p>
<p>The impact of SDI’s model in Zimbabwe is truly inspiring. By emphasizing the importance of collective community efforts and engaging in data-driven solutions, they have not only uplifted individual lives but also sparked an urban renaissance in informal settlements. “The drive to collect and analyze data has helped uncover the unique challenges faced by different communities,” Shiela explains, noting the role of research in shaping effective responses to issues like climate change vulnerabilities.</p>

Shiela’s efforts as a community advocate underscore the importance of fostering local leadership in tackling urban challenges, an approach that resonates globally.
